NAUI Scuba Diver Duration:
Part time classes (evenings and a weekend) start every Monday evening at 18H00 and full time classes (4/5 days) start certain Mondays 09H30. Custome schedules can be arranged for groups of more than 4 participants.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum is 15 years for Scuba Diver certification (Junior certification for ages 12 – 14 years is allowed).
- A medical examination before the commencement of the course or an updated medical within the previous 12 months.
- All NAUI waivers/releases and related forms completed.
- Two recent ID photographs.
- Full Payment will be required before any academic or water session
Aim of the course:
Alpha Dive Centre’s aim is to train students above standards set by the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), and to maintain a level of safety and communication between the student and instructor. The scuba diver course is aimed at training safe and confident divers.
Underwater Skills:
- Give, recognize and respond appropriately to common underwater communications.
- Mask clearing, including removal and replacement.
- Remove, replace and clear primary regulator.
- Regain primary regulator from behind the shoulder.
- Hover without support or significant movement.
- While wearing a standard buckle type weight belt and submerged in a prone position at the bottom or while hovering, unclasp, adjust the position of the belt so that the ballast is evenly distributed and the buckle is centered at the diver's front and re-clasp the buckle.
- Use the buddy system for scuba diving, remaining within 3m or less if required by conditions of buddy.
- Monitor air supply and communicate amount remaining upon request and manage air supply so as to surface within a pre planned minimum air limit.
- Using environmental navigation aids, travel underwater to a designated location or in a given direction for a set period of time.
Sea Dives
- The minimum number of open water dives is 5.
- The dives include at least 4 SCUBA dives and a RESCUE / SKIN dive.
- No more than three scuba dives may be made on a single day during the course.
- 18 m is the maximum depth for any open water training dive during the course.
- Sea dives are done anywhere (weather dependant) between Rooi-Els and Simons Town or on the Atlantic side of the Cape peninsula.
